When most people think of Australia, they see wide open spaces of outback bush, kangaroos, koalas and clean air and water. However, Australia has so much more to offer than just that! Many international students are choosing to study in Australia because of its friendly, laid-back nature, excellent education system, and high standard of living. Australia is currently the third most popular destination for international students in the English-speaking world, behind the United States and the UK.

Australia offers a diverse range of study options for international students, with more than 1,200 institutions and over 22,000 courses to choose from. You can study at all levels of education from primary and secondary school, to vocational education and training (VET), from English language courses to higher education (including universities). And regardless of what you are studying or how long you are studying for, Australia’s laws promote quality education and protection for international students. This includes the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000 (opens in a new window) and the National Code of Practice (opens in a new window) for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2007 (National Code). These provide nationally consistent standards for providers of education and training for international students.

A young student of an age of less than 18 years must have a guardian to look after him. To determine the immigration risk the applicant is analyzed through five assessment levels. These visa requirements include English language proficiency along with means to support him financially and are increasingly stringent from assessment level 1 through to assessment level 5. Generally, a student will be issued with a multiple entry visa for the duration of his/her study course in Australia. This allows him/her to travel in and out of Australia within the period they have been granted. Members of their family (spouse and dependent children under 18 years of age) may accompany them to Australia. If they wish to extend their stay in Australia for further studies they will have to lodge an application for a further visa. Australia has a special system of health cover for international students called Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). Students are required to buy OSHC before coming to Australia. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship requires you to maintain OSHC for the duration of your time on a student visa in Australia. OSHC will help you to pay for any medical or hospital care you may need and will contribute towards the cost of most prescribed medicines while you are studying in Australia
